'TRANSPORTE ATIVO' COLLABORATION 24.01.13

Rio de Janeiro is currently undergoing a series of infrastructural changes due to the international sporting events in 2014 and 2016. In the mobility field, in addition to investments in mass transportation, there is a growing demand for the development of more sustainable alternatives, out of which the bike is the one that stands out the most. In the attempt to better understand the variables involved in implementing better cycling routes in the city, and...

CARTOGRAPHIES FROM RIO 23.01.13

Despite it's consistency as an idea, it became commonplace to illustrate Rio de Janeiro as a city marked by inequalities and invisible boundaries, segmented into formal and informal areas, south and north. All this is fact already known and widely accepted, being on the agenda as a challenge which needs to be addressed immediately. Rio's society, while meeting today ahead of changes that occur in the city due to the new policies of public and private investments aiming the major events that will occur here, must be attentive to the way the city is represented and visualized. The representation of the city should not be seen merely as a passive instrument, but also as a way to participate and project itself. Rio is currently undergoing a gradual process of dissolving borders and alleviation of inequality, however, these changes are not reatined directly in the way Rio sees and uses the city. The spatial pattern of the carioca is still governed by a cartography that overvaluescertain areas over others. Rio still ranks its public spaces from preconceived notions, where cultures...

The exhibition serves as a space where that platform is presented and discussed, an event that features not only the result of the work of data collection, but the future of this open platform through the topics mentioned above.

Guest speakers with notable experience in design and information technology were invited to debate the different dimensions of mapping in the fields of urbanism, architecture, sociology and visual arts. Specifically, the symposium is being devised as the critical portion of the project. An open discussion among guest speakers and participants shall inaugurate a wider conversation about the transformations of cities, in special, Rio de Janeiro.

Rio de Janeiro 23.01.13

One can see in most tourist maps the emphasis on the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, especially at the edge of town, to public spaces for leisure and the natural environment, aspects that are exported (and imported too) as absolute picture of reality urban carioca.

EXPECTED PRODUCTS 23.01.13

In addition to the results to be exhibited during the symposium, the legacy left by the project is aimed at a wider horizon. The theme "Mapping & Transformation" will promote a debate among academics and professionals who use mapping as a design tool, generating visualizations for the understanding and transformation of realities. The theme "Mapping & Politics" will deal with the political aspects of mapping, debating cartography’s supposed neutrality and proposing other ways of thinking about territories visually so that new forms of social and...

EXPERIMENT #01 - YOUR VISION OF THE CITY [CLICK HERE TO PARTICIPATE]

some_text

For the exhibition that will happen at the Carioca Design Center in May 2013, the NEW CARTOGRAPHIES team produced a series of experiments about new ways of mapping the city of Rio de Janeiro. Initially shown in online and digital platforms, our first experiment tries to map the way that the people who live in Rio see the division of the city into zones - North, South, West and Center. Access and share your vision of Rio too!

EXPERIMENT #02 - URBAN LAYERS [CLICK HERE TO PARTICIPATE]

some_text

The second experiment developed by the NEW CARTOGRAPHIES team consists in the construction of a map where the user can relate, in an interactive online platform, the birth and growth of the state's pacification policy in areas controlled by the drug traffic (UPPs 0 Pacifying Police Units) with data collected during the project: life expectancy by neighborhood, population aging, the increasing of real state property value in Rio.

EXPERIMENT #04 - BIKE VIDEOS [CLICK HERE TO PARTICIPATE]

some_text

In partnership with the NGO Transporte Ativo, the NEW CARTOGRAPHIES team developed a platform where it is possible to visualize the paths made by bicycle users everyday, through the use of videos and texts. Providing qualitative information on the paths, those videos show the routes travelled by the bikers on their everyday routine at the city. This dos not configures a security manual for transportation, but a narration of the use of bikes in Rio.
